Reading Comprehension is the product of Decoding and Linguistic Comprehension.
R = D X LC
That doesn't mean that it is easy to learn to read. Speaking comes naturally to humans, but our brains aren't wired to learn how to read. For some children, reading is learned fairly quickly and easily. Many other students require an explicit and systematic approach to help them develop this essential skill.
R - represents Reading Comprehension (truly understanding what is read)
D - represents Decoding (using letter-sound knowledge and phonological awareness to "figure out" words
LC - represents Linguistic Comprehension (the ability to interpret and transform written language into spoken language) Gough and Tunmer 1986
