It has always been my educational philosophy to empower students. My goal is to work myself out of a job by increasing their independence! I will do my utmost to support students to meet (or surpass) their academic standards while at the same time, encouraging social-emotional skills to prepare them for success in life! I expect interaction with students. I shouldn't be the one doing most of the talking! I challenge students by having them do self-reflection as well as providing effective, timely, actionable feedback. I give students choices in their learning, describe the purpose for what we do, and ensure their understanding of new skills by helping them to stretch just slightly beyond their comfort zone. All three of these important practices will increase their motivation toward learning. I am a lifelong learner. If your doctor didn't stay on top of advances in medicine, would you respect her? My teaching practice is ever evolving! I know about all of these myths around learning to read (that are explained in
the video at the bottom of my home page). Instead, I use the Science of Reading to do what's BEST for kids!
